Getting out of debt will require a bit more thought than getting in to debt, but it is doable for everyone.

I remember a guy I knew in college telling me that the easiest way to increase my credit limit was to max out my credit card. This would trigger the credit card company to offer me a higher limit.

However, my college friend never mentioned how to pay off that debt.

This is the conversation that I had with a friend recently, which motivated me to write this post today. Because the easiest way to fix something is to start with an action plan.

So today I have 7 steps to help you beat your money debt using the principles of the law of attraction to become a match to better things.

Let’s get started!

What is the Law of Attraction?

Pretty much everything has a vibration because everything is made up of energy. Some things, like rocks, vibrate at a very low frequency. Other things, like trees or people, vibrate at much higher frequencies.

Our thoughts and feelings also give off a vibration. Like when you meet someone fun and exciting, you feel more exicited and positive to be around them.

Likewise with people who are a bummer to be around…you want to get away as soon as you can. Unless you are also sad and depressed, in which case misery loves company!

That is because the law of attraction states that things with a similar vibration are attracted to each other.

We attract people to us that we ‘vibe’ with and we attract circumstances into our lives that we focus our thoughts on…even if we are not trying to. It happens because our thoughts create our feelings, and we tend to react to our feelings.

Money has a very low vibration, so it is hard to be a vibrational match to it.

What we can be a vibrational match to is thoughts of wealth and abundance, and that is the topic of this post.

Most of our daily thoughts are random.

It is estimated that we have 60,000 thoughts a day, and they tend to flit in and out of our mind all day.

Other thoughts have been planted in our minds, maybe starting in childhood, and we tend to cycle through these thoughts regularly.

Thoughts such as:

Are these thoughts true?

Not unless you want them to be. And that is where many of our money issues arise.

We may have heard these statements over and over and assumed that they are true, but we have never questioned whether they really are. And believing these statements tends to block the flow of money to us.

They are called mental blocks, because they get in the way of our success.

The good news is that you can reprogramm your thoughts and attract better circumstances that lead to more abundance.

How to Use The Law of Attraction to Reduce Debt

If you want to use law of attraction to get out of debt, you need to start at the start, so our first step is to look at how the debt problem started.

I recommend writing all of this in a journal, because this process will come in handy in other areas of your life.

Journaling is a great way to get thoughts out of your head and on to paper where you can pick them apart.

1. Forgive and be open to change

This may be forgiving others or forgiving yourself for not knowing any better.

If you made some bad choices, followed bad advice or even just misunderstood the implications, accept that YOU did that, vow to learn from your mistakes, and then forgive yourself for it.

You cannot change what you do not accept.

Look at the issue, accept that you did not know any better and make the decision to move forward with forgiveness.

Forgiveness is purging, in that you can get rid of a lot of unhelpful thinking when you are willing to forgive. And forgiving others is a gift that you give to yourself…unless you tell another person that you forgave them, they will never know.

So do it for you.

2. Examine your limiting beliefs around money

Limiting beliefs are beliefs that we have that we have never questioned, but that do not serve us. I listed a few above, like “money doesn’t grow on trees” or “rich people are greedy”.

And honestly if you really think that rich people are greedy of course you do not want to be rich because who wants to be thought of as greedy??

So you may want to be rich, but part of you knows that being rich is bad in some way, so you thwart your own efforts.

Many families pass these beliefs down from generation to generation.

So you have to check your generational limiting beliefs around money.

Again, I encourage you to use a journal to write your limiting beliefs in, because if the tendrils are deep in your brain then your beliefs will crop up again and again.

And you need to peel them back like an onion and get to the core.

It is like a “two steps forward, one step back” kind of thing.

That is because your brain tries to create shortcuts for you to make your life easier. So if you repeat a mantra over and over, like rich people are greedy – rich people are greedy – rich people are greedy, your brain gets the message that you do not want to be wealthy.

And your brain will work to make sure that you do not become rich, and therefore a bad person.

Your brain does not like change, but there is a workaround.

Once your brain develops a good shortcut, it will fight change. That is because these shortcuts were meant to preserve our energy in case we needed it for a fight or flight scenario.

But what is life, if not change? Once you start offering up better thoughts for your brain to dwell on…thoughts that make you happier…your brain will get on board.

Because you brain wants you to be happy more than it dislikes change.

3. Change your thoughts about money

You can use different tools to achieve this such as affirmations, visualization, and daily journaling about what you do want in regards to money.

An example of an affirmation is “Making more money is easy!” or “I am a money magnet” or “I am lucky and money finds me”.

I have a couple of blog posts on affirmations:

Affirmations may not feel true to you when you first start.

I have found that the point of affirmations are to decide what is true for me.

Repeating a phrase like “I am a millionaire!” may not feel true to me. But stating “I am willing to be a millionaire” is something I can get behind!

From there, I will keep repeating it, and possibly tweaking it, until I get an affirmation that feels true for me.

Changing your money persona

As you shift your thoughts about money, you may find more financial benefits are coming to you.

At first it may not be money, but instead really great coupons like for a free oil change. Or you go to the store and find the product you wanted for half price.

You need to watch for these benefits and journal them all as well. They are signs of fresh abundance.

Track your money

Write down where it comes from and where it is going.

Include ‘found’ money, which is another sign that you are shifting your money mindset. Finding cash on the street is one way that the universe is saying ‘I’m helping you with your money problems. Here, take this cash.”

Look for unhelpful spending patterns, like over-treating yourself on payday.

It may seem like an “I deserve this” kind of thing, but take a good look at how much you are spending and if it is really necessary.

By ‘necessary’ I mean that if you were spending $100 to $150 a month on dining out, but you haven’t taken a decent vacation in years, could you put that money away for a nice holiday instead? Or use it for some new furniture?

Think about spending your money on something luxurious or lasting rather than on meal and drinks that are gone right after you eat and drink them. And before you say “a vacation does not last!”, well that is true, but you will have the memories forever. And you can use them when you visualize…see #5, below.

Create some new rituals about how you think of money as it goes out

As your journal about money, be sure to use positive language and gratitude for how well money is treating you like how great it is that the rent is paid!

I know it is hard in the beginning, because you just want more money now. But as you shift your thinking, you will find less stress around your money and be in a calmer place to enjoy what you have.

Have faith that more money is on its way to you.

4. Declutter

Nature abhors a vacuum they say.

What that means for you is that in order to draw a new and improved abundant life to you, you have to make room for it.

You want to observe ways that you can enjoy life without unncessary over-spending.

I do not suggest depriving yourself of basic necessities, only cutting back on what really does not serve you.

A lot of very wealthy people drive old, well-built cars that stand the test of time. Buy once and use forever instead of constantly having monthly car payments.

They also buy well made clothing that lasts for years. Consider moving in this direction and becoming more eco-friendly by consuming less and discarding less.

And take a look at your relationships.

Yes, we are talking about toxic people.

I know that some toxic people cannot be avoided, like your boss or supervisor. The best thing that you can do is limit your interactions with them, and if you feel triggered try to back off and escape as soon as possible.

If you have family members in your life who cannot be avoided and that add to your burdens, consider cutting back on time spent with them. Protect your mental health and positive thinking.

5. Visualize your dream life

There is a type of daydreaming called visualization, and it is key to reshaping your thoughts about how money comes to you and how you spend money.

One reason many people get into debt is because they have no real goals or plans for their future and how they want things to be. People with debt do not know how to spend money with a plan, aka strategically.

You can change that starting right now.

First, think about the kind of life that you want.

These are just some random ideas to get you started. Spend some time imagining yourself walking around your dream home, visiting each room. See each room as you walk into it and think about how you would furnish each room or what kind of view you have from the windows.

Or sit behind the wheel of your new car, and run your hand over the seat material or program the GPS or stereo. Try to get into a ‘happy place’ when thinking about your dream home or car.

Then spend some time visualizing yourself as being debt-free

Imagine checking your credit card statement online after your last payment and seeing that zero balance…how does that feel to you?

Pretty good, I bet. Try to dwell in that good feeling for as long as you can, and use it when visualizing your dream life.

These types of good feelings around money are what you want to feel most often to attract more money to you.

You do not have to feel amazing all of the time to manifest, but feeling good is more helpful to visualizing the positive experiences that we want to have with money.

I mentioned earlier about wealthy people driving classic cars that are well made, so when you are visualizing try to imagine yourself well-dressed, with an expensive haircut and looking totally amazing.

And then think about your savings account having $50,000.00 in it. Bask in that good feeling for as long as you are able.

6. Taking action/Receiving guidance

When we want to change our life with law of attraction tools, we need to be on the lookout when the universe gives us something that will help us reach our dream life…these are called action steps.

I have already listed plenty of action steps here, like journaling unhelpful thinking and practicing gratitude for what you do have. Another way of taking action is to watch for signs that the universe is guiding you.

Action steps can take many forms:

You may not take action on every sign that comes to you, but it is a good practice to be aware that the universe is trying to help you, and to notice it. Being inspired to act on an idea may be the first step to new wealth and abundance.

Here are a few examples of ‘taking action’

The thing about action steps is that you need to recognize that you are being guided toward something that you say that you want.

Not all action steps will bring you to the same place; some are there to help you decide if you really want something.

For example, if you crochet dish cloths you may enjoy the extra cash you get selling them but do not want the extra work of creating them. They are turning your hobby into a job.

That is good information to have, because now you know that about yourself and can move in a different direction aka pivot. Don’t be afraid to adjust your plan.

7. Gratitude

It will be hard to manifest more money if you are not grateful for what you have right now. If you are finding it hard to be grateful, start small and focus on non-money things.

Start where you are at.

When I first started my gratitude practice, I listed the same 5 things every day. And then I started discovering more things to be grateful for. And then more, and pretty soon I was filling pages in my journal.

I have a free beginners guide to gratitude if you want to check it out.

Gratitude and forgiveness are the two most important cornerstones of manifesting, and they propel your success faster than anything else.

Positive speaking

I have discussed positive thinking, but it is critical to start paying attention to the times when we use negatives to describe ourselves or our situation.

If you catch yourself saying (or thinking) things like “I cannot afford that because I am broke“, write that in your journal. Don’t get down on yourself for saying it or thinking it.

Just notice that you are saying/thinking it. Then think of how you want your life to be instead.

Create an affirmation, such as “I always have extra money for the things that I want”.

This may not feel true right now, but it is key to re-wire unhelpful thinking.

What I did to make that affirmation feel more true for me was to stash $20 in my car so that if the gang from work was going out after work, I could go. I would drive around saying “I always have extra money”, knowing it was fully true.

Use words that you want to be true, that you want to be your reality…that you can get behind.

Plug your affirmations into an affirmations app on your phone and then write them on sticky notes and place them around your home. When you see the note, say it out loud.
