If you want to succeed with pretty much anything, then you need the mindset of success.
So what exactly is mindset? And how do we succeed with our goals by fixing our mindset?
I am passionate about improving my own mindset because I already know what a less-than-positive mindset got me and, *newsflash*, it was not even close to what I wanted. Let’s explore why.

The connection between your thoughts, beliefs, and actions is well documented and extremely powerful. Many people walk through life believing that their lack of success is due to their abilities or luck, but in reality, the most powerful predictor of your success is actually your mindset.
What is Mindset?
The term mindset simply refers to your overall disposition, or how you think about yourself and the world.
For example, do you believe:
Life is what is happening TO YOU, and most things in life are beyond your control and therefore not really your responsibility?
Or, do you believe that life is what you make it, so your extra effort is essential to your success?
Your mindset is based upon your beliefs and attitudes, and it guides all your behaviors in life.
It informs how you think about yourself, how you treat and react to others.
And how you respond to all the variables that come your way in life.
Your mindset determines:
- How you make sense of the world
- The way that you think about yourself
- Your ability to deal with all the positive and negative aspects of your life.
5 Tips to Help You Change Your Mindset
Your mindset is something you learn over time.
You started to develop your mindset as a child, and it has continued to evolve as you age.
Mindset is the result of practice, behaving in certain ways, and solidifying neural pathways in your brain.
The good news is, it is never too late to learn to change your mindset.
The first step is to recognize your current mindset and how it influences your behavior.
Start noticing your thoughts in response to others and to life’s circumstances.
- How do you talk to yourself?
- Do you have an automatic response when something negative occurs?
- What is your general attitude most days?
Becoming aware of your mindset can help you see where you need to make changes.
Step two is to be conscious of your behavior.
The old adage “fake it until you make it” has some credence when trying on a new mindset.
Want to be more positive? Start actively more positively in various situations.
Do you want to embrace risk? Start by taking small risks regularly.
By adopting these behaviors consciously, you can become aware of how they make you feel and the various outcomes from acting in these new ways.
Step three: Stick with it.
Changing behaviors is hard, and changing attitudes is even more challenging.
You need to make a focused effort every day to change your mindset and embrace the new ways of thinking.
Be sure you are clear with yourself about why you are choosing to adopt a new mindset, as knowing the “why” behind your transformation will keep you motivated and focused on your goal.
Step four: Start by changing small things first
Then you can build up to making more significant differences in your behavior and attitude.
Through small, incremental change, you can achieve real transformation.
Know that each day you are working on your new mindset is one step closer to your new way of thinking.
Changing your mindset is important if your current way of thinking is holding you back from achieving your dreams.
Step five: Not everyone needs to change their attitude fully.
You may just need to modify a few key areas.
Knowing yourself and your current mindset will be crucial, as is having regular check-ins with yourself to evaluate your progress.
Be patient, as changing your ways of thinking about the world will take time.
But know you are doing it for the right reasons, which will lead to you becoming the best person you can possibly be.
The Goal-Setting Mindset
If you want to achieve your goals in life, you must have a mindset that is focused on success.
When you are able to develop a goal-setting mindset, you can focus on attaining your dreams, overcoming obstacles, and realizing your true potential.
A goal-setting mindset is one that
- Focuses squarely of the target
- Remains focused in spite of setbacks
- Understands that only hard work and determination will see you through to the finish line.
Understanding the Goal-Setting Mindset
If you want to attain a goal, your actions and habits will get you there.
But it’s your mindset that sets the stage for what you do.
And, the wrong mindset can quickly lead you away from what you really want.
When your mindset is focused on goal-setting, you are much more likely to engage in actions that lead to goal achievement.
Whether your goal is to be healthier, get a new job, reach a monetary savings target, or graduate from college, be clear about what you want to achieve.
Ensuring that your goal is aligned with your beliefs and values will help you figure out the steps necessary to attain it as well as keep you motivated to do the hard work required for achieving it.
So, how can you develop a mindset that is more focused on goal setting?
5 Steps to Developing a Goal-Setting Mindset
1.Embrace the power of growth.
A positive mindset that embraces change and challenge in life will help you to:
- Set lofty but attainable goals
- Learn from your mistakes
- Consider all kinds of possibilities for yourself.
This growth-oriented mentality helps you see that life is a never-ending process of growth and change, whereby you are constantly setting new goals for yourself.
2. Look for all the ways you are already successful in life.
- What are things you are already doing that are putting you closer to realizing your dream?
- What strengths do you have that you can build upon to get where you want to be next?
Look for ways to learn from people in your life who are successful or who have attained similar goals, too.
If you do not have many people nearby who are goal-getters, find some inspiration online, such as:
- Tony Robbins
- Jack Canfield
- Napoleon Hill
- Brene Brown
- Alison A. Armstrong
- Glennon Doyle
Focus on what is currently working well, and use these to further your work toward setting new goals and reaching them.
3. Learn to quiet the negative voices inside your head (or from others).
Whether it is your own doubts and questions that bubble to the surface in your self-talk or the negative opinions and input of others in your life, tuning out from this negativity will be vital to maintaining a goal-setting mindset.
While you want to be realistic about what you need to do, you don’t need anyone, including yourself, telling you that you can’t do something.
4.Be clear about your vision and how attaining your dreams will affect your life.
Visualize your life when you have reached your goal.
- How will you feel?
- What will be different?
- Why is this important to you?
Visualizing the result is helpful for staying motivated while you are working toward a goal.
5. Cultivate healthy habits of body and mind that will allow you to stay happy and focused on your goal.
When you neglect your health, you won’t be able to fully enjoy the fruits of your hard work toward your goals.
Get enough sleep, watch your stress levels, eat a healthy diet, and get out and exercise regularly.
These healthy habits will allow you to reach your goal and thoroughly enjoy what you have accomplished.
A goal-setting mindset keeps you focused on what is important to you as and gives you the mentality and motivation to pursue your dreams.
Mindset plays a crucial role in success, and the goal-setting mindset is one that can propel you to achieve just about anything you want in life.
